One Wing Control and Landing

This is an old video, but if you haven’t seen it… then check it out. Can’t believe this plane isn’t in smithereenies.

More Lego Geekery

Lego Ship, View 1Yes, I have been at it again. And this time, I just dispensed with the whole “playing with my son” sham.  Ok, so it started with my son.  Then I got a cool idea, and it was right around bed time… so I had a decision.  Either I put this down until next time Marshall wants to play with them… OR, I gleefly spread them around the floor, and work out my idea.

Wings swept backSo I whipped this badboy up.  It’s called the “Switchblade”. It’s wings switch forward and back, and has two deployable mini-ships on it.  Fun little Russ-scale ship!  I should start a “Adult Legos Anonymous” group or something, cuz I get totally obsessed when I start building, and I think I have a problem.  *hic*

Wanna Hear an Awesome Song?

Life is BeautifulIf you are not a fan of opera, give this a quick listen anyway. I saw the movie “Life is Beautiful” again a few days ago, which if you have never seen… do yourself a favor… watch it!  I had the privilege of seeing it (captioned) in the theater when it was released, and it is a very moving story.  It won an oscar, and unlike most oscar winners… I thoroughly agreed.

Anyway, there is an aria from an opera they used as a theme in the movie, which was very appropriately chosen, and well used.  I had to go find it, and now I share it with you.  What a piece!

It’s the aria Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour from the opera Les Contes D’Hoffman and is composed by Jacques Offenbach. It’s clearly the most celebrated aria in the opera, and you should agree it’s worth the honor.  The main part is sung by Beverly Sills, (who, sadly, died last year) and she rocks it… despite having a higher pitched voice than other performances I have heard.  I kindof like this song with a deeper voice.

The intro is pretty quiet to begin with… give it time to get going…

Listen, and be moved unless your soul be hewn from stone.

I told you I’d “branch out”  :P

I am incurable.

Sundowner 50In my grief at the loss of the plane I had put so much work into… I made an extra trip to the hobby store this weekend and picked up a new plane. It’s called the Sundowner 50.  It’s a new style of plane to me, this “pylon racer” type is built for SPEED.  It should be interesting, as people have clocked this baby in at over 130mph straight-line.  Clearly, due to my previous loss… I opted for an ARF (”Almost Ready to Fly”) kit, instead of a full-build kit, so I got it prepped in a weekend.

Look at that head-on! Sleek! It can chamber all of the still-working guts from my Extra 300, and put them to good use in a new kind of flying.  It should be exciting, and it’s pretty much ready to go.  Another $150, but I refuse to be defeated by this!

Check out my Sundowner Wiki Page for a few more pics. I know.  I’m obsessing about this whole plane thing, and you are sick of seeing this crap. I’ll branch out sometime… I swear ;)

R.I.P. Extra 300S

At 17:53 hours on Friday June 21, the Extra 300S suffered an apparent catastrophic failure on takeoff. The engineers are still scratching their heads trying to figure out what went wrong.  Pre-flight checks were OK, with all control surfaces aligned and within tolerances.  As soon as the plane attained lift, she locked in a left-roll attitude that could not be compensated for by the controls.  It was a short flight, and she cannot be re-built.

Here is a picture of the carcass, and the last photo that will be submitted of this airframe, as it now is unceremoniously lumped in the garbage.
Extra is Dead

A number of expert witnesses were on hand when it crashed, and all were as confused as to exactly why it happened.  Now the frame is so mangled that we may never know if perhaps some fundamental damage from the first flight was to blame.  It clearly had something major wrong with it that was missed.

And, oh yeah… by the way…

OMFG I AM SO F**KING PISSED OFF THAT THIS GODD**N PLANE CRASHED INTO THE F**KING GROUND I JUST CANT BELIEVE IT I SPENT FU**KING MONTHS BUILDING IT AND IT F**KING CRASHES OMFG WTF I WAS ALL LIKE WTF AND IT WAS ALL LIKE *SPLORSCH* AND I WAS ALL PISSED BUT HAD TO ACT ALL “ITS COOL” AROUND THE DUDES AT THE FIELD AND I EVEN FLEW MY OTHER PLANES BEFOREHAND AND DID SOME WICKED SH*T SO I TOTALLY GOT THIS FLYING THING DOWN AND THEN I HAVE TO GO AND PUT THE PLANE I ACTUALLY GIVE A SH*T ABOUT ON THE RUNWAY AND GIVE IT SOME JUICE AND MAN DOES IT HAVE JUICE CUZ IT TOTALLY HAS MAD POWER NOW THAT I TUNED THE MIXTURE, BUT THEN I’M LIKE OMFG WTF ITS NOT RESPONDING WHY THE HELL IS IT ROLLING LIKE THAT NO, WAIT… WTF RIGHT ROLL NOT WORKING OMG WTF IT’S STILL, IT’S OMFG IT’S…
